VFFS vs Pre-Made Pouch Machine: Which One Should You Buy?

Film cost, pouch style freedom, changeover speed — one table reads both technologies

VFFS Machine Series ·for owners, buyers and equipment decision-makers

Cover: VFFS and pre-made pouch machine side by side — two technology routes

When automating bag filling, many owners hesitate between a VFFS and a pre-made pouch machine. Both fill, weigh and seal automatically — but they are different technologies: one forms pouches from roll film on the fly, the other uses pre-made pouches. Pick the wrong route and the bag-cost gap and changeover-time gap follow you for years. This article reads both routes across six dimensions on one table, then gives you three self-test questions.

01 Two Technology Routes: In-Line Forming vs Pre-Made Pouch

•  VFFS: roll film in, the former makes the pouch, fill and seal in one flow — pouch style is decided by the former;

•  Pre-made pouch machine: buy/make pouches outside (zipper, stand-up, shaped), the machine opens, fills and seals — pouch style is decided by the pre-made bag;

•  In one line: the VFFS makes pouches; the pre-made machine uses pouches.

✔ First decide whether your pouch style is “formable on a VFFS” or “must be pre-made” — that single step clears half the hesitation.

02 Six Dimensions on One Table

•  Pouch styles: VFFS — pillow, 3-side, 4-side, basic stand-up; pre-made — zipper, shaped, premium stand-up, more freedom;

•  Bag cost: VFFS uses roll film — low; pre-made pouches — clearly higher;

•  Speed: VFFS intermittent up to ~120 bags/min, continuous up to ~300; pre-made single units typically ~40-120/min (typical magnitudes — confirm with the maker);

•  Changeover: VFFS — formula + former, fast; pre-made — pouch tooling/magazine, slow;

•  Footprint: VFFS compact; pre-made needs a pouch magazine and opening mechanism — larger;

•  Investment: VFFS lower entry; pre-made higher overall.

03 Choose the VFFS: Three Scenarios

•  High volume, bag-cost sensitive: 10,000+ bags a day, the roll-film vs pre-made cost gap runs to hundreds of thousands a year — VFFS wins;

•  Multi-SKU small batches: frequent product/size changes — the 10-minute changeover (formula + former) is only a VFFS offer;

•  Regular pouches suffice: when pillow, 3-side or 4-side meets the need, do not pay for pouch styles you never use.

04 Choose Pre-Made: Three Scenarios

•  Premium/complex pouches required: zipper, shaped, beautifully printed pre-made stand-up — a VFFS cannot make them or the cost is too high;

•  The pouch is the selling point: the bag's look and function (e.g. resealable zipper) drive sales — the pre-made premium is worth paying;

•  One large SKU for a long run: one product for a year, no pouch/size changes — the slow changeover is not a problem.

⚠ Note: pre-made figures (speed/investment/bag cost) are typical industry magnitudes — before ordering, ask the maker for measured data and bag pricing for your product.

Final Thoughts

There is no best machine — only the best-matched route. Answer three questions: is the pouch complex? Is bag cost sensitive? Are changeovers frequent? Regular pouches + roll-film cost + fast changeover: VFFS answers most factories. Pouch as selling point or one giant long-run SKU: then consider pre-made.
