A Tiered Health Check for Your VFFS: Daily, Monthly and Semi-Annual Maintenance Schedule

Maintenance is not fix-when-broken — three tiers keep it running: daily, monthly, semi-annual

VFFS faults rarely happen “suddenly” — they are grown, slowly, by skipped upkeep. Leaky seals, jams, noises, electrical failures: every one can be caught by a health check before it breaks. This article breaks maintenance into three tiers — daily, monthly, semi-annual — what each tier does and how, on one table.

01 Daily Check (Every Shift): The Cleaning Trio

The point of daily cleaning is to remove residual material and impurities before they corrode parts and hurt mechanical accuracy. Do it after every shift, following safety rules:

•  Safety first: cut the main power, wait for the heating units to cool fully; never spray water or steam at the machine;

•  Conveyor: blow out debris with compressed air — smooth feed, no jams, no drift;

•  Seal jaws: when film residue or adhesive sticks to the longitudinal/cross seal faces, lightly brush with a silicon-oiled wire brush — flat seals, no leaks;

•  Deck and panels: wipe the HMI, guards and work surface with a soft cloth — keep dirt out of buttons and gaps.

✔ Five to ten minutes a day blocks the roots of the most common faults: bad seals and feed jams.

02 Monthly Check: Lubricate & Tighten

•  Lubricate: dedicated oil for end-seal bearings; full lube for chains and sprockets — less friction, no noise or jams;

•  Retension: check chains and belts for slack and adjust — prevents uneven film feed, belt slip and running deviation;

•  Tighten: go through every fastener — production vibration quietly loosens them.

⚠ The easiest item to skip is the fastener sweep — one loose screw can be the start of the next noise and deviation.

03 Semi-Annual Check: Three Deep-Sweep Blocks

•  Drive belts: full inspection of V-belts and the draw-sync belt — replace cracked, aged or worn ones immediately;

•  Wear parts: assess by service life and wear; replace degraded parts before they stop the line;

•  Electrical: power off first! Tighten terminals, air-blow dust from components and PCBs with dry compressed air — prevents loose connections, shorts and cooling issues.

04 Turn the Three Tiers into a Ledger

•  One sheet: a maintenance ledger per machine with daily/monthly/semi-annual items — tick and sign after each;

•  Ownership: name who does daily, who does monthly, who leads semi-annual — responsibility by person;

•  Log anomalies: note small issues found in checks and close the loop — never “looks fine” and move on.

What to Do

Prevents

Daily

Every shift

Power off & cool: blow conveyor, clean seal jaws, wipe deck

Fouling, bad seals, jams

Monthly

Once a month

Lube end-seal bearings/chains, retension belts, sweep fasteners

Dry bearings, looseness, slip

Semi-annual

Every 6 months

Replace drive belts, screen wear parts, tighten terminals + blow dust (power off first)

Belt aging, part failure, shorts

Final Thoughts

Machines cannot talk, but the ledger can. Daily prevents fouling, monthly prevents looseness, semi-annual prevents overhauls — run the three tiers and you trade small costs now for big savings later. Fewer repairs and less downtime are the most tangible profit on the floor.
