How to Choose Your First VFFS Machine: Film Width, Bag Style, Filler & Speed in 4 Steps

The same name hides 3x price differences — it is the spec sheet that decides

VFFS Machine Series · — for owners buying their first machine

Cover: comparing spec sheets — plan first, price later

Machines all called “VFFS” range from $4,000 to $40,000 — the difference is not the brand but three sheets of the spec list: film width, bag style and the filler. This article gives you a four-step path: decide the bag, the size, the filler, then the speed. Follow it and you will not buy wrong.

01 Step 1: Decide the Bag Style First

A VFFS machine turns flat film into pouches. Your product form decides the pouch style first:

•  Pillow bag (center-sealed): the seam sits on the back — most common, best value, fits snacks, powders and pieces;

•  Three-side seal: flat, tight — good for small packs with higher sealing needs;

•  Four-side seal: sealed on all sides — the tightest, ideal for seasoning sachets and small snacks;

•  Stand-up pouch: with a stand-up device the bag stands on its own — great shelf display for coffee and tea.

✔ Rule of thumb: bag first, machine second — the former decides the forming collar, and changing a collar costs the most.

02 Step 2: Set Film Width & Bag Length

Film width decides the biggest bag you can make and the machine range; bag length decides the speed tier and the timing parameters.

•  Film width: measure the open width of your largest bag — the film must be wider than the bag;

•  Bag length: set your common length band — per the operation flow, 80-130 / 130-220 / 220-320 mm map to different seal/cutter timing;

•  Registration: for printed film, confirm the eye-mark sensor can read reliably so length aligns with the pattern.

03 Step 3: Choose the Filler — by Material, Not by Preference

The filler is the internal organ of a VFFS. Match it to the material — that is the hard rule:

•  Pieces/snacks: multihead weigher or cup/vibratory filler — accurate weighing, gentle on fragile items;

•  Powders/seasoning: auger filler — steady dosing, dust stays in;

•  Liquids/pastes: piston pump or flow meter — controlled flow;

•  Big bags / high speed: multihead weigher on a continuous machine — speed and accuracy together.

⚠ The most expensive mistake is “buy the machine first, add the filler later” — filler and frame are tightly coupled; changing the filler is half a new machine.

04 Step 4: Match Speed to Budget

•  Intermittent motion: brief pause at each seal/cut — simple structure, high dosing accuracy, up to ~120 bags/min, ideal for small-mid output;

•  Continuous motion: jaws travel with the film — dynamic sealing, no pause, up to ~300 bags/min, for high-volume lines;

•  Budget logic: compute your required speed — shift output ÷ working hours ÷ efficiency factor — then pick the tier that fits.

“The golden rule of speed: buy enough, not the fastest. A 10% faster machine can cost 50% more — and you may never use it in three years.”
— From the principle doc, intermittent vs continuous

What to Decide

Key Basis

Common Mistake

1. Bag style

Pillow/3-side/4-side/stand-up

Product form decides

Machine before bag

2. Size

Film width, max length, registration

Width→model, length→speed

Ignoring registration

3. Filler

Multihead/auger/pump

Material decides filler

4. Speed

Intermittent ≤120/continuous ≤300

Back-calculate from shift output

Final Thoughts

Buying your first VFFS is not buying a machine — it is buying certainty: bag style set, size set, filler set, speed set. Walk the four steps and every number on the quotation makes sense. When in doubt, send your material and bags for a factory trial — let data decide.
