How to Thread Film on Vertical Form Fill Seal Machine – Step‑by‑Step Practical Guide

Improper film‑threading is one of the most frequent root causes for downtime on vertical form‑fill‑seal (VFFS) packaging lines. Mis‑routed film brings about common troubles: film deviation, film breakage, wrinkled sealing edges, distorted bag shapes and excessive film waste. These faults will stop your production line and raise overall operating costs.

Even for new operators, film threading on vertical packaging machines is easy to master once you follow the correct film routing path. Below is the standard operation procedure for VFFS film threading.

Step 1: Power‑off for Safety Preparation

Cut off machine power and wait until all moving components come to a full stop. Open safety protective covers. Mount the film roll onto the unwinding shaft. Confirm the correct film orientation: the printed side should face outwards. Lock both side retaining rings tightly to prevent the film roll from shifting left and right during running.

Step 2: Thread Film through Guide Rollers & Tension Assembly

Pull out the leading edge of the film roll. Route the film sequentially through guide rollers and idle rollers, then pass through the tension adjustment unit. Do not over‑tighten or loosen film tension. Too much tension will tear your film; insufficient tension creates slack and wrinkles. Keep feeding the film towards the photo‑eye sensor. Align the color registration mark with the sensor precisely. This setting directly controls bag‑length accuracy for finished pouches.

Step 3: Pass Film through Former & Vertical Sealing Station

Feed flat film smoothly into the bag‑forming former, where flat roll film is converted into tubular shape. Guide two side edges of film into the vertical sealing mechanism. Keep film edges flat and aligned, free of creases and offset.

Step 4: Pull‑down Mechanism, Cross‑seal & Cutting Unit

Clamp film securely between pull‑down belts or traction rollers to achieve stable downward feeding. Continue threading film through bottom sealing, cross‑seal and cutting station. Reserve a short section of film tail for commissioning test.

Step 5: Jog Test Run & Fine Adjustment

Close all safety guards. Start machine under low jog speed. Observe real‑time film feeding status. Check bag appearance and sealing quality. If film drifts sideways, fine‑tune guide roller position, film tension and photo‑eye position. Switch to normal production speed only after stable film feeding is verified.

Practical Troubleshooting Tips

  1. Adjust tension when switching different film materials. Apply higher tension for thick composite film, lower tension for thin PE or aluminum‑plated film.
  2. Keep color marks clean. Dirty registration marks will trigger unstable bag‑length output.
  3. Lock film roll firmly. Loose unwinding installation is the top reason for film wandering.

Correct film‑threading operation greatly reduces unexpected breakdowns and raw‑material loss. It helps your vertical packaging machine deliver consistent pouch quality and maximize production efficiency.
